This easy trek takes the passionate walker into the elephant forests of the Phou Khao Khouay NPA. There are two herds known to inhabit this national park, one has quite recently chosen to roam the bamboo forest nearby the village of Ban Na.
To protect these elephants and to compensate the villagers for the frequent damages, a community-based tourism scheme was introduced. Trained local guides lead the visitors to very remote sites within the forests of this nature reserve, just over an hour away from Vientiane. |

These 3 days trekking will give you an opportunity to see Tat Fane, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Laos, with parallel streams of the Huay Banglieng River plunging out of dense forest and down more than 120 meters. Tat Fane is at the edge of the 1100-sq-km Dong Hua Sao NPA where the trekking trails are the best and perhaps the only way to get into the park. Dong Hau Sao is home to a healthy population of tigers, though you are more likely to see monkey, gigantic butterflies and in the wet season, dozens of great hornbills who like to hang out at the bottom of the falls. |
